Eagerness to Serve
In the gospel account of St. Martha, Luke 10:38-42, Martha complains to Jesus that she is serving while Mary sits in contemplation of the Lord. Jesus does not chastise Martha for her service. Instead, He cites the anxiety and worry. “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things.”
This dovetails nicely with the beatitude for Wednesday: Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. Let us do our best to “hunger and thirst” for the presence of the Lord, as Mary did. And this can be accomplished both in contemplation AND during service.
