Feast Day of St. Damien de VeusterAlso known as Damien of Molakai
On their feast days, saints have great intercessory power. Let us ask for the intercession of St. Damien today, as we reflect on his life and words. St. Damien was a priest from Belgium who volunteered to go to Hawaii to minister to the people of Molakai suffering from leprosy. His presence with the people gave structure and peace to the communtiy that previously was a place of illness and chaos. He built homes and established guidelines for living humanely. He taught the faith and built a parish church. He eventually contracted leprosy himself and died among the people there. Let us reflect on two of his quotes here: “Without the Blessed Sacrament a position like mine would be intolerable.” And “I would not be cured if the price of the cure was that I must leave the island and give up my work I am perfectly resigned to my lot. Do not feel sorry for me.”
St. Damien, pray for us.
